What does “Kaeochinda” mean?
You can see the Thai letters on the right as แก้วจินดา. I’m not exactly sure if it’s correct because my parents only wrote it in cursive (and mostly with the English spelling) and I’ve relied on the net to help me piece it together.
I was told all my life that the last name meant “precious jewel” or something like diamond-in-the-rough but even Thai speakers that I’ve asked in the past can’t completely agree on the meaning because it is a compounded word and I didn’t know how to write it in Thai.
You can still see interesting (net-based) definition and origin of the last name based on individuals in the world with the same last name.

Kaeo (แก้ว), which means “glass,” “crystal,” “gem,” or “jewel.” Sanskrit root: kāca (काच); Pali root: kāca ;
Meaning: Both Sanskrit and Pali roots refer to “glass” or “crystal.” In Thai, the meaning evolved to also encompass “gem” or “jewel,” reflecting its value and brilliance.
Chinda (จินดา), which means “gem,” “jewel,” or “precious.”; Sanskrit root: cintāmaṇi (चिन्तामणि); Pali root: cintāmaṇi ;
Meaning: This compound word literally means “thought-gem” or “wishing-gem.” Cintā means “thought” or “consideration,” and maṇi means “jewel” or “gem.” In Thai, the word chinda or chinta is used as a standalone term for “jewel” or “precious.”
Together, the surname literally translates to something along the lines of “crystal jewel” or “precious gem”. It signifies something valuable, pure, and great. The practice of adopting such surnames, which often have Sanskrit or Pali roots, is common in Thai culture and may reflect heritage or positive aspirations.
